About the CatalogueHaving spoken to many of my regular clients, I believe that a stock medical illustration catalogue, on-line and simple to use would be of great benefit to editors who are going to press tomorrow and suddenly discover they need a drawing of, say, Keller's operation! Maybe it will prove useful to all publishers, in a hurry or not. Simply come to my site, search the catalogue, order the drawing and it will arrive by email, with the invoice! Why buy a thousand unsuitable images on CD when you can buy just the ones you need Choose an image that approaches your requirements and have it altered to suit the article or house style Catalogue content is driven by you, the user, and by current trends in medicine and biomedical science. I will analyze the searches that people do on the catalogue and create artwork based on that information. I will create drawings based on "What's hot at the moment". Make sure you visit the FREE SAMPLES page to see how it works This site is new! The Catalogue is currently under construction. For information about the current state of development, go to the what's new page. There are now enough drawings to give you a feel for the catalogue, but don't be put off if you can't find what you want yet. I'm adding to it almost daily so it's worth book-marking this new resource. Who can use the catalogue? The primary motive for creating this site is to provide a catalogue of stock illustrations – on-line and searchable, and to increase awareness of what Lambda Science Artwork can offer. I see the catalogue as a resource for journals or magazines where the medical or scientific articles are just part of a broader based product. I may be wrong. The catalogue may prove invaluable to publishers of mainstream medical titles too. And, of course, the catalogue is an invaluable shop window for potential commissioners of bigger projects. There are many publications that do not deal exclusively with medical topics and may, from time to time, need an accurate illustration as a one-off. Non-medical magazines often have a health section and an illustration often livens the page or augments the article. Design studios need the occasional illustration when working on drug pamphlets or pharmaceutical advertising. Medical illustrators are fairly rare. Finding one who can produce the drawings you need by tomorrow's deadline are even more so. I want to solve that problem by making this an easy site for finding and ordering that drawing which will lift a page or augment an article. I have written and designed the site myself. I am an illustrator, not a webmaster, so please use the feedback form to give me some....feedback! I want this to be an easy and invaluable tool for anyone working on a health topic, be it publisher, author, design studio, ad-agency or whatever, so let me know how you want it to work. If the drawing you need isn't in the catalogue, get in touch. This may be the virtual world but there's a real person at this end and I'm infinitely approachable. This site is currently under construction but it should be fully operational for mid 2001. Come back every now and then and see how it's going by visiting the What's New page. That's where I'll put the updates. How the Catalogue works A stock illustration catalogue? Surely that defeats the object of an illustration service, where you can commission exactly what you want without searching through a thousand images, all unsuitable? The catalogue is a source of images that may include exactly what you want. It may include images which approach what you want. There may be nothing suitable at all. But, unlike buying a thousand images on a CD ROM, this catalogue is linked to the artist. You could order an image which is perfect for your requirements and have it on your desk within an hour. You could ask for an image based on an existing catalogue entry but with some minor amendments to suit the article or house style. You could just use it as a guide to what you actually want. There is a search form on the main catalogue page. Put in any keywords or phrases, set the appropriate controls (if you like tinkering) and see the search results. You can also manually browse through the pages in the catalogue, but the drawings are in no particular order. When you search or browse the catalogue you will notice that each page has a column entitled "For Sale?". This will either be yes or no. Currently (2/6/01) they all say no, which means you can look but not buy...If you want to commission work, just email me. As the site becomes more established, the number of drawings I do SPECIFICALLY FOR THE CATALOGUE will increase and become the dominant part. These will say "For Sale"...Yes! Then you can just go to the order form and buy it, or just email me if you find it easier. In time, as the collection grows, there will be more chance of finding exactly what you want. Order it, receive it by email, pay for it! Any commissions I receive as a result of this site will be priced for the exclusive use of the client. However, if I feel that the catalogue would benefit from the inclusion of that drawing, I will also offer the drawing to the client at a lower price for permission to include it in the catalogue. How to order drawings from the catalogueSearch the catalogue for all the drawings you need. When you're done, send me an email with your order to If you simply give me the catalogue number, I will assume that you want the drawing in its current form. If you want any changes (labels, colour, size, background etc), then let me know. Here's an example of an actual request I received... Subject.....pics from catalogue
I just wanted to order a picture from your catalogue. No 71 (3-D cross section of skin), but with the size modified if possible - my space is 113mm wide by about 78mm high. Could you move the labels for vein, artery, hair, sweat gland etc to the right side, leave the skin layer labels on the left, and make the background broader? Please invoice me for whatever this costs! All the best Tom Subject...pics from catalogue 2
I've just noticed I need to make another change to the skin diagram: can you differentiate and label the papillary dermis and the reticular dermis? Thanks Tom Pricing and order information The illustrations are individually priced. The currency is the Euro. As a rough guide, € 50 is about £30, or $43 (US). For an accurate conversion to any currency, click the link to the Xenon Labs currency conversion tool. Ordering: Eventually I plan to make the ordering process automatic - a few clicks of the mouse and the drawing is available for your page layout, invoice included - but for now, ordering is achieved by email. All I need from you is the catalogue number(s) and any extra information you feel I need to know, such as mono, CMYK, pantone, fonts and labels, size. You can order a drawing based on an existing (for sale) drawing - I'll give a quote for the cost of amending it. Spelling changes are free (US vs. British). Free Samples: You can test the system by going to the FREE SAMPLES page, ordering one (or both) of the free samples and testing the response time. Another reason for the FREE SAMPLES page is for you to compare the real drawings with the thumbnail preview. Selling images on-line is a paradox. The client should see what they're getting, but if the image is too good, they have it free of charge. I'm sure there are ways of preventing this and perhaps someone will let me know how... The real drawings are, of course, designed for the printed page and simply don't look right when converted to low resolution bitmaps for the previews. File delivery. Each ordered drawing is delivered by email and provided in a variety of formats. The catalogue price includes delivery by email of an Illustrator (ai) file, an eps file, and a pdf file formatted for print quality. The quoted price for each drawing will therefore amount to a delivery of 3 files, zipped. Payment. I accept cheques and International Money Orders in Euros. Payment should be sent within 14 days of the invoice date, which is normally the date of file delivery.
